History

Channel Creation

Channel 9 broadcasting began on November 12, 2002.

Prior to this, there were separate programs in Russian, both news and entertainment, on the Hebrew-speaking channels of Israeli television. In addition, the state-owned broadcasting company Voice of Israel since 1991 began broadcasting the channel in Russian - Radio Reka . Israeli satellite television “YES” and the cable network “HOT” broadcasted numerous channels in Russian - both Russian ( First Channel , PTP-Planet, NTV Mir , TNV-Planet ), and Israeli entertainment film channels translated into Russian and international channels (Hallmark, Eurosport , Romance).

Channel 9 has become a television channel in Russian, showing on its air a wide range of broadcasts: from news and analytical reviews to talk shows and entertainment programs, as well as television series and movies.

During the Second Lebanon War, in July-August 2006, the channel began to broadcast freely on the Internet. Earlier, in 2005, satellite broadcasting of the channel began in the USA , Canada and Australia . Since 2007, broadcasting began in the Baltic countries, Eastern Europe and the CIS .

Strategic Partnership

On February 10, 2013, Lev Leviev’s Group and Africa-Israel announced the signing of an agreement on joining a strategic partner to Channel 9. In accordance with the agreement, a group of private investors led by Alexander Levin invested in channel 9 in exchange for a 50% stake [1] .

The Council on Satellite and Cable Television , acting as a regulator, checked the Levin agreement [2] and approved its accession to channel 9. A few days after this, Leonid Blekhman, who worked on the channel from the day of its creation and has been the CEO for the last 7 years, and Lev Melamid, who replaced Yevgeny Kravchik as the editor-in-chief of the ZMAN.com website in 2011, were dismissed.

In July 2013, the channel came under almost complete control of Alexander Levin , who acquired an additional 48% stake in the channel [3] .

In March 2014, the channel moved to a new studio in the city of Modiin ( Modiin-Maccabim-Reut ) and the logo of the channel changed, and the site design was updated [4] .

Channel 9 International Broadcast

The international distribution of the channel began in 2005 with broadcasting in the USA (satellite GALAXY26) and Australia (satellite NSS6). Channel programs are daily included in the grid of another channel - the American Russian-language channel RTN.

At the beginning of 2008, broadcasting began in the CIS and in the Baltic republics. Channel 9 was available for some time on the Rainbow satellite platform and the iptv operator Beeline .

In 2009 , the channel began distribution via IPTV in the United States , Canada and Europe (mainly in Germany ).

In April 2010, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine added Channel 9 to the list of channels allowed for broadcasting in Ukraine .

Channel 9 on the Internet and NEW MEDIA

The ZMAN.com website opened to users in February 2008. The site was distinguished by a rich news feed, responsiveness and an abundance of video materials that Channel 9 supplied. There was access to the materials of a large video archive. Over the course of the year, the site reached a leading position in the traffic of Israeli news resources. The editor-in-chief of the site was a well-known journalist, winner of the Israeli Prize for Media Criticism Yevgeny Kravchik. Leading authors of the site are Leo Melamid, Anna Danilova, Alexander Nepomnyashchy, David Shekhter , Yuri Moor-Muradov, Ksenia Svetlova .

In early 2010, Channel 9 with partners founded the media company Intersol Digital 9, which owned exclusive rights to sell advertising on leading Israeli Internet resources. The company was established on the basis of the media department of Intersol Moroz LTD.

In June 2013, zman.com was renamed 9tv.co.il

Channel Popularity

According to a study conducted by the Mutagim Institute, in the first quarter of 2009, 67.5% of returnees over the age of 18 watch Channel 9. In general, in the first quarter of the year, 82% of Russian-speaking Israelis watched the channel’s programs. Among the Russian-speaking audience over 18 years of age, the prime time rating for Channel 9 is 14.3%, while Channel 2 of ITV is gaining 4.5%, and Channel 10 is 2.6%.

In June 2011, the economic publication Globes reported that, on the request of the Satellite and Cable Broadcasting Council, the Geocartography Institute and the State Advertising Bureau conducted joint research. According to studies, 51% of Russian-speaking Israelis regularly watch Israel Plus, 27% prefer it to all other TV channels. 78% of respondents said that they periodically include this channel. It is preferred by all the rest 78% of Russian-speaking Israelis aged 55 and over, 50% from 35 to 55 years old, and among young people up to 35 years old, this figure is 18%. Viewers consider this TV channel: “the most suitable” for them - 67%, a connecting link with Israeli culture - 57%, a TV channel with high standards - 51%, and 62% say that its news programs are more objective than the broadcasts of Russian-speaking competitors.
