Psiri ( Greek Ψυρή ) is one of the oldest historical areas of Athens , located in the city center. The area is located between the streets of Euripides, Geraniu, Sophocles, Athens, Ermou and the intersection of Piraeus and Ayios Asomaton.
Now the area is known for comfortable hotels, expensive restaurants. The area of Heroes is most known ( Greek πλατεία Ηρώων ).
History
The etymology of the name of the area is still a controversial issue. It is believed that the word Greek. Ψυρή (ς) may be derived from ancient Greek. Последнееαριανός , and the last - in turn, from the name of the island Psara in the archipelago of Eastern Sporades .
Psiri District was first mentioned in 1678 in travel notes by Jacob Spon and his friend George Weller “A Journey into Greece. Spon of Lyons [1] : Travelers call Psiri one of the 8 Athenian districts.
During the period of the national liberation war, Byron stayed at the house of the British ambassador Theodoros Makris. Among other famous inhabitants of Psiri are the Greek archaeologist Kiryakos Pittakis , Ioannis Karadzas and Alexandros Papadiamandis .
