The 2006 European Cross-Country Championship was held on December 10 in San Giorgio sous Legnano ( Italy ). 12 sets of awards were played: 4 in competitions of adult athletes, 4 in juniors, and 4 more (for the first time in history) among young people (athletes under 23 years old).

In connection with the expansion of the championship program, a record number of athletes took part in the competitions: 469 athletes from 29 countries of Europe took to the start. Each country could put up to 6 people in each of the races. Winners in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the 4 best participants.

Men. 9.95 km
On February 6, 2007, the Portuguese Athletics Federation announced the disqualification of a long distance runner Fernando Silva . In his doping test taken during an out-of-competition test on December 4, 2006, traces of the use of erythropoietin were found. The athlete was disqualified for 2 years, and his silver medal at the European Championship in cross-country (result 28.03) - was canceled [1] .
