Game career
Early career
Harry Monk began his career at Torquay United in the 1995/96 season, having played 5 matches for the team. At the end of the season, he moved to Southampton , where he became a professional footballer in May 1997.
Monk returned to Torquay on loan in September 1998 and immediately won a seat at the heart of the first team. The debut took place in the match against Derby County on November 28, 1998, Harry Monk took the place of injured Ken Monk .
In September 1999, on loan, he played for Stockport County , but was recalled back to Southampton for two games in January 2000.
In January 2001, Harry Monk was rented by Oxford United , but was again recalled due to Glenn Hoddle's injury and crisis among Southampton defenders. In May 2001, a footballer helped defeat Manchester United and Arsenal .
From December 2002 to March 20, Monk played for Sheffield Wensday on a leasehold basis with the possibility of redemption, but the Owls flew into the second division .
In February 2004, Harry Monk left the Saints and, becoming a free agent, signed a contract with Barnsley . For six months, Monk tried to gain a foothold in the basis of the new team, scored the Bristol City goal in the FA Cup , but in June of that year he moved to Swansea City .
Swansea City
Harry Monk helped Swans to advance in the standings in his first season, and in the second season to win a place in the playoffs of the First Football League . In August 2006, after the departure of Roberto Martinez , it was announced that Monk would become the team captain for the upcoming season. Prior to this, the footballer had already assumed the duties of captain instead of the Spanish midfielder. However, in the new season, Harry Monk gets a cruciate ligament rupture, in a seemingly innocuous collision with the Scunthorpe United striker Andy Keo.
Monk returns to the team at the start of the 2007/08 season. With him, the team becomes the champion of the First Football League , gaining 92 points, which is a record for the club.
In the 2008/09 season, the Swansea defense center was two footballers: Harry Monk and Ashley Williams , who had come from Stockport County, the club in which Monk had played before. Good performances of the team allowed to take 8th place in the first season after returning to the Championship .
The 2009/10 season was not the best for Harry Monk: he played only 22 games due to injuries and disqualifications. The team missed a place in the playoffs on the last day of the season. After leaving the club, Paulo Souza , who led the rivals of the Swans - Leicester City - Harry Monk criticized the former coach.
The new season started well, Monk went out in the first team every match until he was injured in the match against Colchester United in the FA Cup on January 8, 2011. Soon the footballer will recover from the injury and help him defeat Reading in the final of the Championship playoffs. Monk will be rewarded with a new three-year contract, calculated until 2014.
February 24, 2013, Harry Monk and Ashley Williams raised the League Cup after a landslide victory in the final meeting over the “ Bradford City ” (5: 0).
After playing just 15 matches in the 2012/13 season, on July 15, 2013, Harry Monk handed the captain's armband to his longtime defense partner Ashley Williams. In the first half of the 2013/14 season, Harry stopped getting into the squad and played only one meeting in the League Cup.
Coaching career
Swansea City
On February 4, 2014, Monk was appointed Swansea's head coach after the dismissal of Michael Laudrup [1] . On February 8, in his first game as a manager, Harry won a landslide victory in the South Wales derby over Cardiff City (3-0). Monk successfully fought for survival and one round before the end of the championship provided Swansea with a residence permit in the Premier League. On May 7, 2014, Monk headed the club on an ongoing basis, signing a three-year contract with the “swans” [2] .
In the 2014/15 season, Swansea started with three consecutive victories over Manchester United , Burnley and West Bromwich Albion . At the end of August, Swansea led the Premier League standings, and Monk received the Best Coach of the Month award. On May 11, 2015, Swansea won an away victory over Arsenal (1-0). Thus, the “swans” became the third team in the history of the Premier League, who twice won Arsenal and Manchester United in one season, and finished the championship in a record high 8th place.
In July 2015, Monk signed a new three-year contract, but unsuccessfully began the 2015/16 season, gaining only 1 victory in the starting 11 rounds. As a result, on December 9, 2015, after 12 years at the club, Monk was fired from his post as head coach of Swansea [3] .
Leeds United
On June 2, 2016, Monk signed a one-year contract with the Leeds United Champions Club, replacing manager Steve Evans [4] . On August 7, in his first official game, Monk was defeated by the Queens Park Rangers (0: 3). The first victory in the championship was won in the 4th round away from “ Sheffield Wensday ” 2-0.
Gradually, Leeds managed to improve their tournament position and by November 2016 climbed to 6th place in the Championship. Monk was nominated for the Best Manager Award for October, but lost the prize to Newcastle United mentor Rafael Benitez . In the English League Cup, “Leeds” also performed successfully and under the leadership of Monk went through four rounds, reaching the quarterfinals. November 29 at Anfield , they lost to Liverpool 2-0, but showed an impressive game against the then leaders of the Premier League.
On December 17, Leeds defeated Brentford (1-0), rising to 5th position, the highest place on Christmas since Simon Grayson's work in 2010. On March 19, 2017, after defeating Brighton and Hove Albion (2-0), Leeds increased its lead from 7th place to 11 points, gaining a foothold in the playoff zone. However, in the last 8 games of the season he won only one victory and lost the last ticket to the playoff to Fulham .
At the end of the season, Monk expected to sign a new long-term agreement with Leeds and twice met with the new owner of the club, Andrea Radritsani, but he only offered to use the option to renew the contract on the same terms, as a result of which, on May 25, Monk submitted his resignation [5] .
Middlesbrough
On June 9, 2017, Monk was appointed head coach of the Middlesbrough club [6] , having flown out of the Premier League. On August 5, in his first official game, Monk was defeated away from Wolverhampton Wanderers (0: 1). On August 12, in the match of the 2nd round against Sheffield United , the first victory was won with the score 1: 0.
Having finished the first round of the championship only in 9th place, on December 23, 2017, Monk was fired [7] .
Birmingham City
On March 4, 2018, he headed another Championship club - Birmingham City , instead of Steve Cotterill who had been dismissed the day before [8] .
