History
Liven was a small village with a population of up to 1,500 people until 1857, when large-scale coal mining was started in its vicinity. By 1914, the population of the city grew to 25.5 thousand people.
The First World War inflicted huge damage on Leuven. The city was completely destroyed, more than a thousand inhabitants were killed. For the courage shown by the population of the city during the war, Lievin was awarded the Iron Cross in 1920.
The expanding coal production allowed the city to recover quickly after the war. The city flourished until the 60s of the XX century, when due to the frequent disasters in mines and the recession of the mining industry as a whole, coal mining began to decline, and the mines gradually closed. The last mines were closed in 1974, after a major tragedy at the Saint-Amé mine. New industries were opened in the city, which made it possible to provide work for a large part of the former miners and prevent a mass outflow of the population.
