Klimov, Yuri Mikhailovich

Yuri Mikhailovich Klimov (born July 22, 1940 , Syktyvkar [1] , Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , RSFSR , USSR ) is a former Soviet handball player and coach.

Career

Club

He started playing handball as a student at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute , went to the Premier League with the Polytechnic institute club and became one of the top scorers in the championship [1] .

The next team in his career was MAI. In its composition, seven times became the champion of the Soviet Union and once won the country's cup [2] . He became the owner of the European Cup and Cup of Cups [3] .

Team

It was first called up to the USSR national team in 1963 [1] . Participated in five world championships , at the 1978 World Cup, together with the team took second place [2] .

He took part in the Olympic tournament at the XX Summer Olympic Games , where the USSR team took 5th place. At the tournament, he scored 7 goals in 6 matches held [4] . On the eve of the Games in Montreal, he decided to return to the team, became the captain of the team [1] . In the tournament he scored 12 goals in 6 matches and became the Olympic champion [5] .

In total, the USSR team played 173 matches, in which it scored 423 goals [3] . In 1968, he played with the world team in a match against the Czechoslovak team [2] .

Coaching

From 1979 he was a coach of the youth team of the USSR [2] , and from 1980 to 1982 - coach of the first team of the Soviet Union [3] .

In 2006, he led the Iranian national team to the bronze medals of the Asian Games [1] . Later coached the Iranian club " Goiter Ahan ."
