- January 15 - The British physicist and chemist Henry Cavendish published an article Experiments on Air in the journal Philosophical Works of the Royal Society on the discovery of the composition of water . [one]
- June 4 - Elizabeth Tible became the first woman to fly to the sky in a balloon. [2]
- August 21 - Joseph Brama patented the first castle . [3]
- November 20 - the open astronomer NGC 2367 was discovered by the English astronomer William Herschel in the constellation Canis Major . [four]
- Based on classical ideas, John Michell theoretically predicted the existence of large-mass astronomical objects ( black holes in modern terminology), on the surface of which the second cosmic velocity is equal to the speed of light . This feature makes them invisible, since light cannot leave their surface.
