Biography
Shelley Rudman was born March 23, 1981 in the town of Swindon , county Wiltshire . From a young age she was fond of sports, was actively involved in athletics, in particular, she ran a distance of 400 m with barriers. She became interested in the skeleton after the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, when her compatriot Alex Kumber won the bronze medal. The very next year, she joined the national team and took tenth place in the youth world championship. In 2004, she won the European Cup stage in the Austrian Eagles, a year later she won gold at the Winter Universiade in Innsbruck.
Having become a leader in the UK women's skeleton team, Rudman won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , but for the competition she needed a new professional sled for the skeleton worth about Β£ 4,000. In order to raise funds in her hometown, a canoe race was organized, in addition, the girl had to earn extra money as a school teacher. In the end, the necessary amount was still managed to be raised, and new sledges were acquired. Initially, Rudman set himself the goal of getting into the top ten, but already during the training races on the Olympic track she showed the first time among all the participants, even ahead of the current world champion. When it came to the main races, in the first attempt she arrived only in the fourth, but she completed the second almost perfectly, which allowed her to reach the third position and get a bronze medal.
At the 2007 World Cup in Swiss St. Moritz, Shelley Rudman took tenth place, missing almost the entire season due to the birth of her daughter. The most successful in terms of personal achievements for her was the 2008/09 season, when the British skeleton won the World Cup stage in Eagles and finished second in the German KΓΆnigssee, and also won the European championship, setting a track record during the second race - 1:09, 97. She finished the season in second place in the world ranking compiled by the International Bobsleigh and Toboggan Federation .
The 2009/10 World Cup season was no less successful, four times was among the winners, including came first twice, once second and once third, in addition, three times remained in fourth position, not reaching the podium a little. These results allowed her to take second place in the overall standings, and on January 29, 2010 it became known that Rudman together with Amy Williams would go to the Olympic Games in Vancouver .
