Yosef Sapir ( Hebrew יוסף ספיר ; born January 27, 1902 , Jaffa , Ottoman Palestine - February 26, 1972 , Israel ) - Israeli politician, deputy of the Knesset from the party General Zionists, the Liberal Party and the GAKHAL bloc ; Minister in several Israeli governments.

Biography

Yosef was born in the city of Jaffa on January 27, 1902 , in the Jewish family of Eliyahu and Mina Sapir. He studied at the Ezra School in Jaffa, then at Tel Aviv Elementary School and a seminar for teachers in Jerusalem . He headed the Pardes Syndrome of Citrus Plantations in 1939.

He served as mayor of Petah Tikva in 1940 - 1951 . He was one of the leaders of the party of the General Zionists . He was elected to the Knesset of the 1st convocation from this party, worked in the commission on foreign affairs and security , the commission on internal affairs and the commission on education and culture .

In 1951, Sapir was re-elected to the Knesset of the 2nd convocation , headed the commission on internal affairs , and worked on the commission on economics . He was elected to the Knesset of the 3rd and 4th convocations from the faction of the General Zionists, was a member of the financial commission of the Knesset .

In the fourth government of Israel, he served as Minister of Health ( December 24, 1952 - December 29, 1953 ), then he was replaced by Yosef Serlin . In return, Sapir received a portfolio previously owned by Serlin, the portfolio of the Minister of Transport . He retained this post in the fifth government of Israel.

He joined the Liberal Party , was elected from it to the Knesset of the 5th convocation. Then he worked in the Knesset as part of the Gakhal bloc . He worked in the financial commission (5, 6 convocations) and the commission on foreign affairs and security (7 convocation).

He was one of the initiators of the creation of the GAHAL unit. In 1971 he was appointed chairman of the Liberal Party.

In the thirteenth and fourteenth governments of Israel, he served as minister without a portfolio . In the government of Golda Meir ( 15 ) from December 15, 1969 to August 6, 1970 he worked as Minister of Trade and Industry , then Pinhas Sapir received this post.

He died on February 26, 1972 in Israel, in which the village of Carmey-Yosef was named after honor [2] .
