Before the coup, he served in the Malian army with the rank of captain, occupying middle positions in the Malian army [2] . He taught English at a military camp in Kati [3] . He also completed training “in training programs in the United States, Georgia, and as part of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia” [4] .

March 22, 2012 headed the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and the Revival of the State created by him [5] [6] . The first actions as the head of state were the abolition of the Constitution and the actions of certain institutions of power, the introduction of curfews and the closure of the country's borders.

The coup has received widespread condemnation of the international community. The countries of ECOWAS, a West African interstate community, immediately banned cross-border trade with Mali and froze Malian deposits at the Central Bank of West African States using the CFA Franc. The military junta found itself in complete international isolation, without money and with the Tuareg-Islamist rebels advancing from the north. In the country, fuel began to run out quickly, which was completely imported, and problems began to arise with electricity supply [7] .

April 1 announced the restoration of the constitution and state institutions. It was also announced the upcoming convocation of a national assembly, which would have to decide on a transitional government and the organization of elections. Entered negotiations on the resignation of power. While negotiations were ongoing, Tuareg rebels finally took control of the entire northern part of Mali and on April 6, 2012 proclaimed the “Independent State of Azawad” [7] .

After the transfer of power to the civil administration on April 12, 2012, he retained great influence in the country. He opposed attracting foreign military to fight the Tuareg uprising, fearing for his power. The introduction of the French contingent in January 2013 led to a strengthening of the position of the civil administration and a decrease in the influence of Sanogo [7] .

On November 27, 2013, he was arrested on the murder in May 2012 of 21 paratroopers loyal to the ousted President Tour. Currently under investigation [7] .
