History of the Java Brand
In 1856, the Karaite merchant Samuil Gabay, who in the middle of the 19th century moved to Moscow from Kharkov, founded a tobacco factory in Moscow, which was then called the "Samuil Gabay Partnership". Factory production was popular, and the business developed successfully.
In 1912, the factory launched production of cigarettes from tobacco brought from the Indonesian island of Java . Actually, this product and got the name "Java". After the revolution, the factory became state property, however, it continued its work constantly. She did not stop during the Civil War. In the 1920s, the factory produced cigarettes of the highest and first grades, as well as other types of tobacco products.
In 1922, the name "Java" was officially given to the factory in honor of the popular cigarettes. By this time, Java had acquired the status of a socially significant symbol, and apparently lost its essence in the form of foreign raw materials for production. Smokers associated with these cigarettes a new time, a revolutionary spirit. [2]
From 1927 to 1928, Mosselprom produced a total of 8 billion cigarettes, of which almost a third accounted for Java.
The Great Patriotic War once again showed that the factory "Java" is for the state not so much a manufacturer of cigarettes as a national treasure. Despite the daily airstrikes in the first months of the war, the work of the factory did not stop. In September 1941 , most of the facilities were evacuated to Cheboksary and Saratov . [one]
The end of the war was a new stage in the development of the enterprise, despite the fact that much had to be restored. German captured machines for cutting tobacco were brought to Moscow at the Java factory. In 1947, the first filter cigarettes in the history of tobacco production in Russia appeared in the country.
The USSR also produced Java 100 with a length of 100 millimeters.
By the 1960s, state investments in the development and installation of new technological lines, as well as the advanced training program among factory workers, gave a natural result: the Java factory became one of the leading tobacco companies in the country. In the 1960s, Java became the first Soviet filter cigarettes of international standard King Size.
The incredible excitement caused by interruptions in the supply of “Java” products to remote areas, pushed other factories to produce cigarettes of the same brand. However, Java was the most popular "java" (that is, produced at the plant of the same name): smokers preferred to pay extra to second-hand dealers, but it was her who received it.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Java factory was privatized. In 1994, British American Tobacco acquired a controlling stake. In 1997, preserving the classic brand, the company launched a new full-scale Java Gold. [3]
