Biography

Originally from a noble Bavarian family, he was allegedly related to the Agilolfings . He was a student of St. Boniface , spent some time in the founded St. Boniface monastery in Fritzlar . Around 734, Sturmiy was ordained a priest , after which, just like his teacher, he devoted himself to missionary work in German lands.

In the years 736-740, he founded the Herschfeld Abbey . After the mayor of the Franks, Carloman granted Sturmius and his Benedictine community land near the Fulda River , in 744 Sturmiy founded on it the Benedictine Abbey of Fulda , which later became the main spiritual center of Catholicism in Germany, as well as one of the largest scientific and cultural centers of medieval Europe .

In the years 747-748 he visited the cradle of the Benedictine Order of Montecassino in order to familiarize himself with the local rules and regulations. Upon his return, St. Boniface the first abbot of Fulda.

In 754, Saint Boniface died and was buried in Fulda Abbey, which turned the monastery into a place of pilgrimage and contributed to its growth and increase authority. After the death of Boniface, Sturmius came into conflict with the Bishop of Mainz Lull on the status of Fulda Abbey. Lull tried to subjugate the monastery to his authority, while Sturmiy sought direct submission of Fulda to the pope and her independence from the local church and secular authorities. King Pepin the Short took the side of Lull, as a result of which Sturmius was forced to go to a three-year exile in the abbey of Jumeier in Normandy . In 766, Sturmiy was allowed to return to Fulda, the abbey itself received the status of imperial , which settled disputes.

Charlemagne assigned Sturmius a mission to the Saxon lands he conquered. Accompanying the emperor on a campaign against the Saxons in 779, the abbot became seriously ill. After returning to Fulda, he died on December 17, 779 and was buried in the monastery basilica.
