Chronofantastic (from the Greek. Χρόνος - time and science fiction , another name - "temporal science fiction" ) is a genre of science fiction that tells about time travels . Sometimes works of this genre, in which time travel does not just give impetus to the plot, but is the engine of events, are called “chrono opera” [1] .

Characteristics of the genre

Time Machine Delorean From the series Back to the Future .

The key piece of this genre is Wells' Time Machine . Although time travel has been written about before (for example, Mark Twain's “ Yankees from Connecticut at the Court of King Arthur ”), it was in the “Time Machine” that the time movement was intentional and scientifically justified for the first time, and thus this storyline was introduced into the scientific science fiction [1] .

In the 20th century, the idea of time travel was developed. Science fiction writers have devoted many works to the analysis of temporal paradoxes that can be caused by a journey into the past or a return from the future to the present. This topic, for example, is raised in Ray Bradbury 's famous short story “ And the Thunder struck ” [2] . Kir Bulychev used time travel in dozens of his books, including a cycle about Alice . Anne McCaffrey in The Flight of the Dragon and its sequels, also uses time travel.

Chrono-fantasy is often combined with an alternative story . One of the most popular plots in chrono-science fiction - a hero from the present, who has fallen into the past, changes the course of history. “Yankees ...” Twain served as an inspiration for many such books [2] . The most famous works of this kind - “ Let Darkness Not Fall ” by Leon Sprague de Camp , “Rise in Time” by Harry Harrison , “ Patrol of Time ” by Paul Anderson , etc. The narrative of spontaneous time dips in modern science fiction is called popanist literature [ 3] .

There are also often books about parallel worlds formed due to different development in time, and people traveling between them or even controlling their development [2] . Such an idea is used in Anderson’s Time Patrol, The Crossroads of Time by Andre Norton , The End of Eternity by Asimov , The Draft by Lukyanenko , the Doctor Who television series [1] , the novels by Keith Laumer , etc.
