Baltimore vase - painter - an anonymous Greek vase-painter who worked in Puglia around 375 BC. e. The Baltimore vase-painter is considered the most significant representative of the Late Apulian vase-painting, as well as the last significant vase-painter from Puglia as a whole.
The conditional name of the vase painter comes from a vase, which is now stored in the Walters Art Gallery , Baltimore . His early work was greatly influenced by the work of the vase painter Pater. Among the works of the Baltimore vase-painter, vases of large shapes are more common - a crater with volutes , amphorae, lutrophore and hydria. In addition, the Baltimore vase-painter painted vase for vines with funeral scenes, where the figures are often dressed in yellow-orange clothes. Other motifs of the vase painting were mythological scenes, themes of Dionysus, as well as erotic, wedding and everyday scenes.
It is likely that the workshop of the Baltimore vase-painter was in Kanos. Stylistically, and especially in the forms and themes used, the works of the Baltimore vase-painter are similar to the works of the hell-painter , however, the murals of the first are characterized by a wide variety of small details, especially in the ornament.
Several vase painters were closely associated with Baltimore, including the Staz -on-Trent vase painter, who was either a very close colleague, or the Baltimore vase painter himself. Among his followers are the white painter White Sakkos, the White Sakkos group, the vase painter Sanson, the Stuttgart group and the Kanfar group.
