Biography
In 1901 he built the submarine Protector . Not having received an order from the American fleet, he sold this boat in 1904 to the Russian fleet.
According to the model, Protector was built by submarines of the type “Osetr” , which during the Russian-Japanese war were delivered to Libau, and from there to Vladivostok. Later, under the project of Lake for the Russian fleet, submarines of the Caiman type were built.
Back in the United States, Lake founded the Lake Torpedo Boat Company in Bridgeport , which built 24 submarines for the US Navy during World War I. Due to the termination of orders for submarines after the end of the war and the corresponding financial difficulties, the company was closed in the mid-1920s.
Lake unsuccessfully tried to find a cargo of gold on the British frigate “Gusar” sunk in 1780 with the help of a submarine of his own design.
He died in 1945.
His name was called base submarine USS Simon Lake (AS-33) .
