Fema Samos ( Greek θέμα Σάμου ) is a Byzantine administrative and legal formation founded in the 9th century. Located in the eastern Aegean , it was one of the three naval themes of Byzantium . Samos was engaged in the construction and supply of ships, as well as a set of sailors for the Byzantine fleet .
The first mention of the Samos femme, led by the stratig , took place in the book Clitorology in 899. The administrative unit included the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea and the western coast of Asia Minor between Adramition and Ephesus . The city of Smyrna was the capital of the theme , while the subordinates of the tourmaha (vice admiral) had offices in Adramition and Ephesus [1] [2] .
The existence in the eighth century of the title “Samos stratig ” was confirmed by a discovered seal mentioning theodore of Theodore [3] .
In 911, Feme's armed forces comprised 3,980 rowers and 600 marines, as well as a fleet of 22 warships [1] [4] . The mainland of Samos was subordinate to the Thraxes of the Thrace . This, as well as the absence of references to civil servants of this theme, indicates a separation of powers. The stratig of Samos was occupied with the construction of ships and the recruitment of crews, as well as the protection of the islands, and the coast of the mainland was already the sphere of influence of the stratig Thracessia [5] [6] . At the end of the XI century, the fleet of Samos was disbanded, and as a result, Samos became an ordinary theme [1] .
