This Catholic church has the status of a small basilica . Since it is directly subordinate to the pope , it refers to the papal basilicas .
Construction began in 1739 on the site of the parish church of Saints Justus and Pastor . The construction was completed in 1745.
The facade depicts allegorical statues of Love, Faith, Hope and Force by sculptors Roberto Michel and Nicholas Carisan. Carisana on the facade depicted the suffering of the early Christian martyrs Justus and Pastor. Bartolomeo Ruska in 1745 decorated the dome with fresco painting.
The Italian composer Luigi Boccherini , who died in Madrid, was buried in this church. In 1927, Benito Mussolini ordered his remains to be transported to the church of San Francesco in the city of Lucca .
