The W40 is an American nuclear warhead developed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory [1] and put into service in the late 1950s and in service in 1959-1972 [2] . The warhead was a type of atomic charges with accelerated fission ( eng. Boosted fission ).
The W40 warhead used a Python- type nuclear weapon , also used in the atomic bomb B28 and the W28 warheads and W49 .
The warhead had a diameter of 457 mm, a length of 0.81 m, and weighed about 175 kg. The warhead capacity was 10 kt .
The W40 was equipped with ground-to-ground missiles of the MGM-18 Lacrosse type and CIM-10 Bomarc unmanned interceptors [1] .
