Biography
Born in a poor noble family Lansky . The son of the landowner of the Kholmsky district of the Novgorod province Sergei Artemievich Lansky (1711-1785) from his marriage with Anna Fedorovna Ushakova (1724-1809). Cousin of the favorite of Empress Catherine II - Adjutant General A. D. Lansky . Together with his brothers (there were eight sons in the family, one of them V.S. Lanskoy ) received home education.
He began his service in January 1780 as a sergeant in the guard, as a captain, took part in the Russian-Turkish war . He retired in 1795 with the rank of colonel and was appointed to the civil service. In the beginning, the director of savings in the Saratov province , from 1797 served as a prosecutor in the Vologda province , and since 1800 - a member of the Main Postal Board .
Since 1803 he has been a full-time state adviser. In 1802-1804, Vilnius ; then the Moscow governor (1806-1810). Due to the conflict with the Commander-in-Chief in Moscow, Count I.V. Gudovich, he was transferred to Kiev (1811-1812). From December 1809, Privy Councilor, from December 1811, Senator .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, the commander-in-chief of the 2nd Western Army of Prince Bagration . After the battle of Borodino, he left the army because of kidney pain and returned to Petersburg, where he was in the 5th department of the Senate. From 1813 to 1819, the head of the Department of State Property . On February 24, 1826, due to his frustrated health, Lanskoy resigned and went abroad for treatment.
According to the critical review of Prince I.M. Dolgorukov , Lanskoy was "an egoist and a cunning man-pleaser, seeking only his own benefit and in no way able to be a benefactor, as he loved to show himself" [2] . According to the memoirs of Prince S. P. Trubetskoy , after the suppression of the Decembrist uprising, Lanskoy “did not allow his own nephew's wife to Prince A. I. Odoyevsky any attempt to avoid the fate awaiting him and, not allowing him to rest, led him to the palace. After that, Lansky’s wife inherited two thousand souls from Prince Odoevsky after pronouncing a verdict on him ” [3] .
He died in October 1833 in London . K. Ya. Bulgakov informed his brother that “Lanskoy came there so weak that it was impossible to undertake an operation for a stone disease, so he ended his life. He was a good man and knew well business affairs ” [4] . His body was transported to St. Petersburg and buried in the Tikhvin cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra .
His wife is Princess Varvara Aleksandrovna Odoevskaya (d. 11.09.1845), daughter of Senator Prince Alexander Ivanovich Odoevsky (1738-1797) from his marriage to Maria Fedorovna Vadkovskaya (1751-1786). She was buried next to her husband. Their daughters Maria (12/27/1804—?) And Sophia.
Literary works
The only work that was printed during his lifetime was the translation of Voltaire's “Tombstone of commendation to Louis XV” dedicated to his cousin A. D. Lansky (favorite of Catherine II ). "Small, but quite well-known to the whole world ... a glorious word" (according to Lansky himself) was not so much a biography as an edifying work; Louis XV in it is bred in the image of an ideal ruler.
