Biography
Emil Auguste Joseph de Wildeman was born on October 19, 1866 in Brussels in the family of Francois Emile de Wildeman and Maria Hortenza van den Berg. He studied at a school in Brussels, in 1883 he entered the University of Brussels . March 17, 1887 received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Then Wildeman began to work in the Brussels Botanical Garden. Wildeman's first scientific publication on botany was published in 1885 . Wildeman worked in the Botanical Garden for over 40 years. Under the guidance of Professor Leo Herrera, Wildeman received his Ph.D. from the University of Brussels. On July 20, 1890, Emile Auguste received a Ph.D. for his cytology work Études sur l'attache des cloisons cellulaires . In June 1894, de Wildeman married Anna Maria de Cor, through whose parents he met the bryologist Jules Cardo. Then Emil de Wildeman began to study the flora of the Belgian Congo. In 1900, he was appointed curator of the Brussels Botanical Garden. In 1912, Wildeman became its director. Since 1921, he was a professor at the University of Antwerp . In 1931, de Wildeman retired. Emil Auguste Joseph de Wildeman died in Brussels on July 24, 1947 .
