Gu Jiegang ( Chinese trad., Уп , 顾颉刚 , pinyin : Gù Jiégāng ; May 8, 1893 - December 25, 1980 ) is a Chinese historian and ethnographer, the author of the theory of the complexity of the Han ethnic group, a title figure in a movement advocating criticism of the undivided trust in classical historiography (igu 疑古, see en: Doubting Antiquity School ).

Born in Suzhou in 1893, a year before the outbreak of the first Sino-Japanese war for China. As a result of the defeat of China, various unrest began in the country. So Gu ended up in a revolutionary group and took part in the Xinhai Revolution . However, in his own opinion, he soon enough realized that "he does not have a sense of ownership in politics, nor can he play the role of leader and raise the masses of the people."
In 1920 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Peking University , was a student of Hu Shi . He was fond of history, philosophy. As a historian, he used scientific approaches to influence ideological and political disputes in Chinese society [2] .
After 1949 he acted as a major scientific authority.
For some time he was in friendship with Lu Sin .
Historiography
For many researchers, Gu Jiegan remained a mystery - his works are characterized by the use of unconventional approaches, however, he continues to appeal to the national pride of the Chinese. With a certain appeal to Chinese culture, Gu said that Chinese identity would "resist modernization."
