Biography and Creativity

Information about the life of Faustino Bocchi is incomplete and contradictory. He was born on June 17, 1659 in Brescia in the family of Giacomo and Julia Fayoni. According to traditional data, Bokki studied painting with Angelo Everardi, nicknamed “Flamingo”, which he received for his excellent knowledge of Flemish painting and following the lessons of Jerome Bosch in his paintings. Everardi is also described as masters of three genres: images of figures, images of battles and images of fools. According to other sources, Faustino began with the artist Carlo Bachokki and only then, after his death in Bachokki in 1678, transferred to Everardi. According to some information, Bocchi lived all his life in Brescia, according to others, he went to Florence and worked for some time at the Florentine court (three of his paintings from the Pitti Gallery prove this). It is only known for certain that Bokki lived a long life as a sybarite, who liked to spend time among pleasant philosophical conversations to the accompaniment of a harp, on which he himself played excellently.

The style and themes of his paintings have developed from different sources. He was probably familiar with the works of Jerome Bosch (engravings from his paintings were in use in the 17th century). Another source of inspiration was the caricatures of his Florentine predecessor, Baccio del Bianco, whom he could meet with his contemporary Pierre Leone Gozzi, and the satirical engravings of Jacques Callot . As a result, Bokki created his original genre in which he portrayed Lilliputians in the most comic situations long before Jonathan Swift wrote his “Gulliver in the Land of Lilliputians” (the book was first published in 1726, when Bokki was already 67 years old).

The chronological reconstruction of his work is extremely difficult because there are no dates in the artist’s paintings. He owns images of two saints and several religious scenes from the ruined church of della Pieta di Brescia, as well as small square paintings with stories from the life of St. Benedict - all these works are executed in the classical style, but in heavy, dark colors (these works, representing the church ensemble, were disassembled and dispersed into different collections at one time). The payment documents found in the 1980s made it possible to accurately date one of Bokka's work - the image of St. Mark from the church della Carita (1726). The payment received for it is about the same level as that of Pietro Avogadro , Giuseppe Tortelli and Antonio Paglia - this may indicate that, as a performer of religious works, Bocchi did not enjoy great respect.

Despite the fact that Faustino Bokki was a student of the Everardi battalist, it is extremely difficult to identify his works in the battle genre. The greatest fame was brought to him by paintings with images of midgets, which were successful in the Veneto region and glorified him. This genre, originating from Flemish painting, based on fantasy and dreams, was considered by some as artistic trickery, by others, as something vulgar. However, these grotesque paintings were successful with the wealthy bourgeoisie. Since most of Bokki's paintings are in private collections, their complete catalog has not yet been compiled, it is only known that there are more than seventy of them.

The works of Faustino Bocchi are in the Pitti Gallery, Florence (three works), in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia (“The Uninvited Guest”, “The Chicken Hunt”), in the Breno Museum (“Lillipots that light the fire”), in the Milan Gallery Directorate ( six paintings on various topics), in the City Museum of Padua ("The Dwarf is Trapped", "The Sick in Front of Pan", "The Red Parrot" and "Attack of the Crab"), in the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin, Moscow (“Allegory of Taste”, “Allegory of Hearing”), at the National Museum, Warsaw (“Chicken Hunt”, “Cooking Macaroni”, “Caring for Thrush”, “Dancing of Dwarfs by the River”) and many Italian private collections.
