General Ledger

The book of stylized historical fiction novels "Gaspard from Darkness: Fantasies in the manner of Rembrandt and Callot " was published in 1842 by a friend of the deceased poet, sculptor David d'Ange, with the support of Saint-Beuve and with his foreword. She gave rise to the development of a new literary genre - prose poems.

Posthumous recognition

Baudelaire gave a high assessment of the book by Bertrand: he turned to the genre opened by Bertrand in his book Paris Spleen ( 1869 ), and contributed to the new publication Gaspard of Darkness in 1868 . The originality of Bertrand was appreciated by the Symbolists - Mallarmé , Villiers de Lille-Adans , Moreas , Theodore de Banville , and subsequently - Pierre Reverdy , Max Jacob , Andre Breton . Three short stories became the basis of Ravel 's Night Gaspard Piano Suite ( 1908 ). In 1922, the street in Dijon was named after Bertrand.
