Content
Club career
Demetriou is a graduate of the English club " Leighton Orient ", he signed his first professional contract with the team in July 2006. The player made his debut in the championship in November 2006, having replaced the match with Yeovil Town , the game ended in a goalless draw. In the first season, he played 24 matches in all competitions, mainly coming on as a substitute.
The 2007/08 season became more successful for Demetriou, coach Martin Ling gave him more playing practice, providing an opportunity to prove himself.
Despite the fact that during the 2008/09 season Leighton Orient played unconvincingly, Demetriou's performances impressed the fans. Information began to appear about the interest in the player from Plymouth Argyle and Charlton Athletic . However, the defender publicly announced his intention to stay in the club, in addition, fans recognized him as the player of the year in the team [4] .
On June 2, 2010, Demetriou officially signed a contract with AEK Larnaca for an unnamed amount. The reason for the transition was the player’s desire to regularly play in the Cyprus national team . He said that he was very sad to leave Leighton Orient, but he had to progress in order to play for the national team.
On June 28, 2013, Demetriou signed a two-year contract with Anorthosis with a possibility of extension for a year [5] .
On July 1, 2015, it was confirmed that Demetriou had signed a contract with Walsall for an unnamed amount [6] .
On June 22, 2016, Demetriou signed a contract with Southend United, which comes into force after undergoing a medical examination [7] . Demetriou rejected the offer of a new contract from Walsall, as well as the opportunity to move to Portsmouth [8] .
International Career
On January 20, 2009, coach Angelos Anastasiadis first called Demetriou to the Cyprus national team. He made his debut on February 10 in a home match against Serbia , having replaced instead of Dimitris Christofi, his team lost 2-0. On February 11, Demetriou held the first full match in the team against Slovakia , he helped the team score two goals and win with a score of 3: 2. He was recognized as the best player of that match [9] . On October 10, 2015, he scored his first goal against Israel as part of the qualification phase of Euro 2016 , Cyprus won with a score of 2: 1.
