Odrizes

The Odrys ( lat. Odrysae , other Greek: Όδρύσαι ) is a Thracian tribe living on the tributary of the Gebra Atriske, according to other evidence - on the plain of Gebra.

History

Kingdom of Odris, 4th century BC e.

Genealogy of the descendants of Teres

Mention of them first occurs in the prehistoric era. Greek myths attributed to this tribe the singers Famirides and Orpheus , of whom the latter was considered the king of the Odris . In the history of odrys, for the first time appear during the campaign of Darius Gistasp to Scythia . Darius managed to subjugate all the Thracian tribes except the Odris, due to the impregnable position of their country. The Odris king Teres took advantage of the defeat of his neighbors and expanded at their expense the limits of his kingdom, to the Black Sea . Theres's son, Sitalk , united under his authority the entire coast from Abder to Istra, which in the north separated the kingdom of the Odries from Scythia; the western border separating the kingdom of the Odries from the Triballs and the Peonians was the Osius and Strimon rivers. In 431 BC Having secured the support of Aberdeen Nymphodore, the son-in-law of King Sitalka the Athenians dragged the Odris into the Peloponnesian war . Sitalk sent reinforcements to the Athenians, for which the son of Sitalk, Zadok, received the right of Athenian citizenship. An attempt by the Lacedaemonians to form an alliance with the Odris was unsuccessful. In 429 BC e. Sithalk undertook a campaign against the king of the Macedonians, Perdicki II , but soon reconciled with him and ceased relations with the Athenians. In 424 BC e. Sitalk fell in battle with the tribals; his nephew Sevt I ascended the throne, at which the power of the Odris reached its highest point. With the death of Sevf (at the end of the Peloponnesian war), the power of the Odris gradually began to decline. The Greeks who wanted to conquer Chersonesos , and Philip II , who in 343 BC, intervened in their internal conflicts . e. occupied part of the country of the Odrizes. Under Alexander the Great, Sevt III attempted to rebel against Macedonia, but to no avail. In 322 BC Lysimachus compelled Sevf to recognize the supreme power of Macedonia . In the next century, a series of revolts of the Odris against the Macedonians took place, but before the Romans conquered Macedonia, they could not get complete freedom for themselves. The Romans, having conquered the Macedonians, did not touch the Odris, not missing, however, cases to interfere in their internal affairs. In 42 BC King Sadil, being childless, bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans. The revolutions of the Odries under Tiberius and Caligula were suppressed; Vespasian annexed the Kingdom of Odris to the Roman Empire .
