Google describes the font as “modern but affordable” and “thrilling.” [3] [4] The headset is licensed under the Apache license [5] . The entire font set is officially available for free download from January 12, 2012 on the Android Design website. The headset includes direct and oblique styles for fonts of various widths (Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, Black, Condensed).
Language coverage
Roboto supports Latin , Greek (partially) and Cyrillic characters [6] . In Android, the Noto font is used for languages that are not supported in Roboto, including Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese , Korean , Thai, and Hindi [7] .
Development
The font is entirely developed internally by Google, interface designer Christian Robertson , who previously developed the Ubuntu Titling Font font in his own font company, betatype. [8] [9] It was released for the first time in 2011 with Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich”. [ten]
Redesign
On June 25, 2014, Matthias Duarte announced on Google I / O that the Roboto font was significantly redesigned for Android 5.0 “Lollipop” . Changes compared to the previous version are most noticeable in the signs B, R, D, P, O, E, G, K, 1, 5, 6, 7, 9 and in punctuation marks [11] .
Usage
Besides the fact that the font is used by default in the Android operating system, since 2013 it is also the default font of other Google services, such as Google+ , Google Play , YouTube , Google Maps [12] and Google mobile search.
Roboto Bold is the default font in Unreal Engine 4 .
It has been announced that the font will be the default font in Kodi , a free open source media player.
It is also used by Dell as a font for its website, but in fact the company’s signature font is Museo Sans.
It is also used by VKontakte for its website.
Font Options
Roboto Slab
Roboto Slab is a block font based on Roboto. It was introduced in March 2013 as the default font in the Google Keep note storage service. [13] The font was released in four saturation options: thin, light, regular and bold. Unlike the usual Roboto, there were no oblique versions of the style for him.
Heebo
This is an extended version of Roboto that includes Hebrew characters. [14]
