It is a romance parody of an espionage thriller and at the same time it seriously affects aspects of the socio-political and military confrontation between the socialist camp and the Western world , and also has an anti-war orientation. The book was very popular in the Soviet Union . In connection with the emigration of one of the authors ( Vasily Aksyonov ), it was not reprinted until 1990. For 15 years, it was the most expensive art book on the black market of the USSR. According to the authors in the preface, their novel is “adventure, documentary, detective, criminal, political, mock, satirical , sci-fi and, most importantly, realistic at the same time”.
Story
Gene Green (Yevgeny Grinev, son of a Russian White Guard emigrant ) finds himself in the center of a spy plot for CIA workers (former Nazi SS men ), undergoes training for the Green Berets special forces, takes part in the Vietnam War , is abandoned with an espionage mission in the USSR , where he finds out about the true intentions of his superiors from the CIA.
In the USSR, Gene Green has a psychological turning point, and he begins to act against former associates - to the anti-war sentiment and nostalgic feelings for the homeland of his ancestors - Russia he has added a reason for personal revenge (the CIA was involved in the death of Gene's father). Gene is trying to kill his immediate superior and longtime friend, Major Lot, who turned out to be an inveterate Nazi and used the resources of the CIA for personal (very unseemly) purposes.
