Neretva pirates traded robbery on the Neretva in Dalmatia in the Middle Ages . First appeared in a region called Paganie at that time. They occupy a special place in the folklore of Croatia , because they fought with the Venetian and Genoese republics, the Ottoman Turks , as well as with the robber Muslim gangs [1] . It is believed that the Venetians who won the battle at Cape Mica were named pirates [2] .
History
Pirates attacked the Venetian merchant ships in the Neretva Delta. In the IX century, they captured a fortified settlement near Umag [3] . They were baptized after 870 .
The robbers carefully chose a shelter and planned the road to retreat. The river delta was a dense labyrinth of smoothers , which helped them successfully hide. On their small boats, pirates could swim in shallow water without fear of pursuit [4] .
