In 1880, 'Triomphe d'Amiens' , ' La Brillante ' , ' Richard Smith ' , ' Mrs. Cleveland ' were synonymous with' Général Jacqueminot '. Currently, they are considered as similar, but independent varieties [1] .

The variety is named after one of the veterans of the Napoleonic Wars [2] . According to legend, one of Napoleon’s favorite officers caught his daughter in the arms of a young officer and, having hit him, killed him. The girl who witnessed the death of her lover died from a broken heart. After a while, near a rose-covered arbor where lovers loved to sit, a new rose with red flowers grew [3] .

According to another source, the variety is named after the French general of the early 19th century and the founder of the famous brewery in Paris until at least 1938. After the death of the gardener Roussel ( Fr. Monsieur Roussel ) who worked in Médon , near Paris, all the crops went to the gardener Rousselet ( Fr. Rousselet ), who after a while discovered and propagated a successful seedling [4] .

In 1904, the first perfumes of the famous French perfumer Francois Coti - Rose Jacqueminot (Rose Jacquinot) were released. Success came to the master when he broke the bottle on the floor in a boutique that refused to sell it. Feeling a wonderful smell coming from the floor, visitors immediately began to demand this perfume . Rose Jacqueminot achieved popularity in an instant! Soon, women only worshiped Koty and no one else, he became a ladies' perfumer. Everything that François Cotte did was immediately recognized as the standard of sophistication and good French taste.

'Général Jacqueminot' was one of the most popular rose varieties in private Silver Age gardens. The famous poem by F.K. Sologub written in 1913 is devoted to this variety:

The smell of the Jacquinot rose flickers
Which loves Mikhail Kuzmin.
Coal fire greets my fireplace.
The fragrance rose Jacquino.
The corners of the cozy are quiet and dark.
Carmine is spilled on a scattering of carpet roses.
How languid the smell of the Jacquemin rose
Who loves Mikhail Kuzmin! [five]

This variety is one of the ancestors of many modern varieties and to this day is found in the gardens of lovers of ancient roses.
