History

For almost a decade, since 1981, Karl Lewis, Olympic champion in 1984 and 1988, the world champion in 1983, 1987 and 1991 [1] , the winner of the best result in the seasons 1981, 1982, 1985, reigned supreme in the world arena for 100 meters. 1987, 1988 and 1991 [2] . By the time of the competition in Stuttgart, Carl Lewis was the holder of a world record (9.86 s), set at the Tokyo World Championships in 1991 and at the same time was a world championship record. However, the career of the famous athlete, who turned 32 in 1993, was already approaching sunset. At the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, he entered only in the long jump and relay (at the qualifying tournament he was only sixth in the 100th U.S. Olympic team), and in his absence, the 32-year-old Englishman Linford Christie became the Olympic champion.

1992-1993 - the period of the short and bright rise of Lynford Christie. In 1992, at the age of 31, he became the Olympic champion of Barcelona. In recent years, he regularly showed results better than 10.00 s, constantly took places in the top of the top ten sprinters of the year, became the champion of the Commonwealth games and the European champion. His personal record was 9.92 s. With this result, which was the European record, at the 1991 World Cup, he took only fourth place [3] .

The contender for the victory was also Leroy Burrell, the ex-world record holder (9.90 s), the holder of the second result in the history of athletics (9.88 s), the leader of the world seasons of 1989 and 1990.

A certain clarity in the alignment of forces before the World Cup was introduced in June 1993 by the US Championship in Eugene, where three members of the American team were selected. Here Andre Cason has shown great shape. On June 16, in the preliminary run and semifinal, he twice showed the time of 9.79 s with a tail wind of 5.3 and 4.5 m / s (in terms of the maximum permissible wind of 2 m / s this corresponds to about 9.88 s). The next day, the strongest world sprinters gathered in the finals - two-time Olympic champion and world record holder at this distance Karl Lewis, former world record holders Leroy Barrell and Kelvin Smith, bronze medalist of the 1992 Olympics Dennis Mitchell, Olympic champion of 1992 at a distance of 200 m Mike Marsh . In a highly competitive environment, Andre Cason won again with a score of 9.85 s (with a wind speed of 4.8 m / s). Two other trips to the World Cup were won by Dennis Mitchell, who finished second with the same time, and Carl Lewis, showing 9.90 s. Leroy Burrell finished fifth with a score of 10.15 and played only in the relay at the World Championship [4] .

Competition Progress

On the first day of the competition, Andre Cason made a request for victory. He was the best in the preliminary races with a score of 10.09 s, and in the quarterfinal he showed 9.96 s, which was his personal record and the best result of the season in the world. According to the results of the quarter finals, Linford Christie was second with the result of 10.00 s.

On the second day, both semi-final winners showed better results than 10 seconds. Andre Cason, who re-updated his personal record and the best result of the season (9.94 s), and Linford Christie, who won the second semifinal with a score of 9.97 s, were again distinguished. Daniel Effiong from Nigeria, who took second place in the first semi-final, set a personal record - 9.98 s, but lost the status of holder of the best result of the season.

In the final, Namibian Frank Fredericks and Canadian Bruni Surin, who fled the first two lanes, started the fastest. Already at the tenth meter of the distance, they were half a meter ahead of Carl Lewis, who was running along the fourth track of Lynford, who was slightly behind him on the third track. Christy continued to accelerate and in the middle of the distance caught up with the leaders along with Kason running along the sixth lane. Lewis fell behind and, with Mitchell, fled somewhat behind. In the second half of the race, Christy and Cason overtook the leaders, Christy finished with the second result in the history of athletics (9.87 s), which was only 0.01 s worse than the world record, Cason for the third time updated his personal record - 9.92 s . Lewis was also able to overtake Fredericks and Surin, but became only the fourth, as the third quickly reached the finish line Mitchell (9.99 s) [5] .
