Biography

As a schoolboy, he became the winner of the Moscow Mathematical Olympiad in 1953 and 1954. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University (1959) and graduate school with him; student I.M. Gelfand , fellow student V.I. Arnold and S.N. Kruzhkov .

While defending his dissertation “Unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups” [1] for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences (1962), he was awarded the degree of doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (at that time he became the youngest doctor of physical and mathematical sciences in the USSR). Professor (1965). Since 1962 he taught at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. Since 1994 he has been teaching at the University of Pennsylvania . Chief Researcher, IPPI RAS .
