Mara Zalite ( Latvian. Māra Zālīte ; born February 18, 1952 ) is a Latvian poetess, playwright and public figure. Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (1998).

Biography
Mara Zalite was born on February 18, 1952 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory of the Russian Federation in a family of exiles. In 1956, she returned to Latvia with her family.
She studied at the Zemgale school . She graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Latvian State University (1975). Worked as a referent at the Writers' Union. SSR (1974–1979), literary consultant of the magazine “Liesma” (1977–1990), chief editor of the magazine “Karogs” (1989–2000), president of the Association of Latvian Authors (AAPCK / OLA, since 2000), chairman of the State Language Commission ( 2002-2004). Member of the Board of the National Library of Latvia, member of the Copyright Advisory Council and member of the National Council for Culture under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia [1] .
Creativity
The first poem was published in the district newspaper in 1971. Literary publications since 1972. Creativity Mary Pour inherent diversity. She is the author of poems, plays, essays, song texts, cantata and oratorio texts, the libretto of musical performances by Latvian composers Raimond Pauls , Janis Lusens , Juris Karlsons , Sigmars Liepins , Peteris Vasks . The works of Mary Zalite have been translated into Russian, English, Swedish, French, Lithuanian, Estonian, Belarusian, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Moldavian, Turkmen and Italian.
