Biography
A part of Marquis de Nuantel’s mission was also to buy manuscripts, sculptures and other objects of the ancient heritage. Karreya was recommended to de Nuantel by the painter and theorist of painting Charles Lebrun , so that the first could accompany the marquis as a draftsman. So in the period between 1670 and 1679 . Jacques Carrey made more than 500 drawings of cities, antiques, ceremonies and examples of local festivals and customs in Asia Minor, Greece and Palestine.
Charles Olivier de Nuantel visited Athens in November 1674 . Here in the two-week period, Carrey created about 55 drawings of the Parthenon sculptures. Thirty-five of them also contain detailed information about gables, metopes and its friezes - they have been preserved to this day in the Paris National Library . Since 20% of the Parthenon sculptures were destroyed by the Venetians in 1687 , the work of Carrey is the only evidence of the destroyed sculptures. His sketches in red and black chalk carefully and with archaeological accuracy depict cracks and other damage, without trying to fill in the missing details. A reprint of Jacques Karrey’s drawings with a description is given in the Etienne brothers’s book The Riddle of Ancient Greece: The Archeology of Discovery.

Three full-fledged paintings created by Karrey in 1675, are now unknown. However, the portrait of the Marquis de Nuantel in Athens is exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Chartres.
