History

Jaunlatgale (Abrensky) county. Yellow indicates a part of its territory transferred to the RSFSR in 1945 as the Pytalovsky and Kachanovsky districts of the Pskov Region

According to the peace treaty between Latvia and the RSFSR , signed on August 11, 1920, the western part of the Ostrovsky district of the Pskov province with the Pytalovo railway station, which has mainly the Russian population, became part of the Republic of Latvia. The territory was included in the Ludza (formerly Lyutsinsky) county . On April 1, 1925, from the northern part of Ludza county, the Jaunlatgale county ( Latvian Jaunlatgales apriņķis ) was formed with its center in Jaunlatgale ( New Latgale , until 1925 - Pytalovo). April 1, 1938 in connection with the renaming of the city in Abren, the county was also renamed Abrensky.

On August 23, 1944, the eastern part of the county with an area of 1075.31 km² (approximately 1/3 of the county’s territory), which constitutes the territory transferred to Latvia in 1920 (except for the present Pedezen parish ), was transferred to the newly formed Pskov region of the RSFSR, formally - January 16 1945 with the formation of the Pytalovsky and Kachanovsky districts of the Pskov region. After the restoration of independence until 2007, Latvia challenged the ownership of these territories.

The remaining major part of the Abrensky district on October 12, 1945 was renamed Vilyaksky district , and in 1949 due to the administrative-territorial reform, the Vilyaksky district was divided into Abrensky (center - Vilyaka ) and Balvi districts, later united in 1956 into Balvi district , existed until 2009.
