Valka County

Valka County ( Latvian: Valkas apriņķis ; German: Walksche Kreis ) - the administrative unit of the Livonia province of the Russian Empire , then the Republic of Latvia , which existed in 1745-1949. Center - the city of Valk (Valka) .

History

The county was formed in 1745 as part of the Riga province . In 1796, after the transformation of Riga governorship, Valka county became part of the Livonia province [2] . In 1920, the southern part of the county was transferred to the independent Republic of Latvia . After Latvia joined the USSR ( 1940 ) until 1949, the county was part of the Latvian SSR .

Population

According to the 1897 census, the county's population was 120,585 people, including 10,922 inhabitants in Valka [1] .

National composition

The national composition of the census of 1897 [3] :

  • Latvians - 106 016 people (87.9%),
  • Estonians - 8714 people (7.2%),
  • Germans - 2536 people. (2.1%),
  • Russians - 1592 people (1.3%),
  • Jews - 1295 people (1.1%)
