Geography
Included in the Kerch group of lakes , the largest in the Crimea. Length - 8 km. The average width is 3.0 km, the largest - 3.5 km. The average depth is 2 m, the greatest - 3 m [2] . The lake is not used. The nearest settlements: Shchelkino and Mysovoe (to the north of the lake), Semenovka (to the west), Azov (to the north-east).
It is connected by a channel with the North Crimean channel . There is also a channel going from the Sea of Azov to the pumping station (Shchelkinskaya aeration station) through the eastern part of the lake. In the period 1979 - 1981 , in connection with the construction of the Crimean NPP , an earthen dam 8 km long and 3-3.5 m wide was built around the lake, which they were going to use as a cooling pond for technical water supply to the station, allowing it to raise its level a few meters above the surrounding area. The dam surrounded the entire lake, with the exception of the northern and northeastern parts, where (in the north) the Ezhovy, Sredny and Utiny peninsulas are located. In the central part of the water mirror is the island of Latau (height 0.5 m above sea level). In the south, there is a salt marsh 7 km long and up to 1 km wide, as well as small salt marshes located in the north (from the Yezhovy Peninsula to pine and elm trees) and the northeast (to pine and acacia trees).
In the spring of 1989, the dam of Lake Aktash broke through, flooding the surrounding area.
At the western part of the dam there is the Shchelkino- Lenino road, a railway station , treatment facilities, an ORS base. To the north-west of the lake are the Crimean NPPs, the Shchelkinskaya aeration station, and a landfill. North-east of the lake is the East Crimean wind farm (operating), SES-5 (inactive). Southeast - Astana Flood Reserve
The average annual rainfall is 400 mm . Food: surface and underground waters of the Black Sea artesian basin .
