Life

Born in the family of the Austrian Archduke from the Tuscan branch of the Habsburgs, Carl Salvator and his wife, Princess Maria Immaculata of Bourbon-Sicilian, daughter of King of Both Sicilies Ferdinand II . He was a general from the cavalry of the Austro-Hungarian army, doctor of medicine at the University of Innsbruck named after Leopold and Franz , cavalier of the Order of the Golden Fleece and other honorary awards.

On July 31, 1890, Franz Karl married Archduke Maria Valeria ( 1868 - 1924 ), the youngest daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria , better known as Sissy . Ten children were born in the family:

  • Elizabeth Francis ( 1892 - 1930 ), in 1912 married Count George von Waldburg zu Zeil Hohenems ( 1878 - 1955 );
  • Franz Karl ( 1893 - 1918 ), had no children;
  • Hubert Salvator ( 1894 - 1971 ), married Princess Rosemary Salm-Salm ( 1904 - 2001 );
  • Jadwiga ( 1896 - 1970 ), married Bernard, Count zu Stolber-Stolberg ( 1881 - 1952 );
  • Theodore Salvator ( 1899 - 1978 ), married Maria Theresa, Countess von Waldburg zu Zeil Trauchburg ( 1901 - 1967 );
  • Gertrude Maria ( 1900 - 1942 ), married George, Count von Waldburg zu Zeil Trauchburg ( 1878 - 1955 );
  • Maria Elizabeth ( 1901 - 1936 ), had no children;
  • Clement Salvator ( 1904 - 1974 ), married Elizabeth, Countess Ressegur de Miremont ( 1906 - 2000 );
  • Matilda Maria ( 1906 - 1991 ), married Ernst Hefel ( 1888 - 1974 );
  • Agnes ( 1911 ), died in childhood.

Maria Valeria died in 1924 . 10 years after her death, Franz Salvator entered into an organic marriage with Baroness Melanie von Ricefels ( 1898 - 1984 ). Franz also had an illegitimate child from a relationship with Princess Stephanie zu Hohenlohe :

  • Rudolf Franz, prince of the Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (born 1914 ), received the surname of his mother’s husband, although his father is considered [by whom? ] Franz Salvator.
