The name Teryuhane is katoykonim , it is connected with the center of their settlement - the village of Bolshoe Teryushevo, and is probably derived from the male name (Teriai - Teryuhai - Teryush), the self-name Teryuhan - Mordva. Teryuhane very early entered into close contacts with the Russians , but were baptized only in the middle of the 18th century , having forgotten the Erzya language by this time, while maintaining self-awareness. Also the pre-Christian features had the material and spiritual culture of Teryukhan, in particular clothing, ornament, different from other Mordovian groups. Calendar, wedding and funeral rites preserved a number of magical actions. Very rich in folklore, especially song.
