Occurs, according to the pedigree legend, from a certain Tsarevich Blagoden (Bilgitdin) from the Golden Horde , who left in the second half of the XIV century to serve in Ryazan to the Grand Duke of Ryazan Oleg Ivanovich . His descendants allegedly retained the title of princes, and under Ivan IV Vasilievich, the orphans of one of them were called the children of the Dead, after which both they and their descendants began to bear the name of Mertvago.

Emblem Description
The shield is divided horizontally into two parts, of which in the upper field in the red box is a golden lion standing on three paws, and with the fourth right paw holds a golden cross. In the lower part, in a black field, a silver moon is depicted with its horns facing upward. On the sides and at the bottom of the moon, seven silver hexagonal stars are visible.
The shield is crowned with a noble helmet and crown. Crest : three ostrich feathers. The mark on the shield is red and black, lined with gold. Shield holders : a horse on the right side, and a leopard unicorn on the left side . The coat of arms of the Merthwago clan is included in Part 5 of the General Herbarium of the noble clans of the All-Russian Empire, p. 51 .
