Biography

Hitomi Kanehara dropped out of school at the age of 15 and since then has devoted all her time to writing. In this, she is supported by her father, Mitsuhiro Kanehara, a professor of literature and a translator of children's books.

She was born and currently lives in Tokyo . She wrote her first novel “Snakes and Earrings” at the age of 21. This work was awarded the prestigious Akutagawa Prize , one of the most prestigious literary prizes in Japan; together with Risa Wataya (born 1984), who shared the first place, is the youngest winner of this award. By 2008, the circulation of Kanehara's debut novel reached a million copies. [4]
