Sangatt ( fr. Sangatte ) - commune in France , O-de-France region , Pas-de-Calais department , Calais district, Canton -1 , 8 km west of Calais and 5 km from the European A16 motorway , on the shores of the English Channel . The name of the village has a Flemish origin and literally means "a gap in the sand."

The village became known after the start of construction of the railway tunnel under the English Channel, because it is in the territory of the commune of Sangatt that the tunnel comes to the surface in French territory.

History
From the beach at Sangatt on July 25, 1909, the French aviator Louis Bleriot raised his airplane to the sky and landed in Dover in 37 minutes, having thus made the first flight through the English Channel by plane.
