Born July 28, 1845 in the family of fisherman Janis Christian and Julia. Augustus was the eldest of eight children; he had four brothers and three sisters. The circumstances of family life subsequently made Augustus a convinced teetotaler.
Self-taught . From adolescence until 1883, Augustus Dombrovskis worked in Yanjavarty at a sawmill with his wealthy uncle Jekab Dombrowski, one of the first Latvian industrialists. Subsequently, he decided to open his own business; his first successful deal was the rafting of a large batch of rafts to Milgravis.
In the autumn of 1888, A. Dombrovskis submitted a petition to the board of the Vidzeme province in connection with the opening of a sawmill in Vecmilgravis . The sawmill was created in an open field, at the beginning of the current Muldru Street. In 1900, 310 people worked here.
Trying to create a decent life and make cultural leisure accessible for his workers, Dombrovskis provided them with favorable conditions for land and materials for construction, but with the condition that the workers refrain from drinking. In addition, at his own expense he opened and maintained an elementary school and one of the first kindergartens in the territory of present-day Latvia (1900), a boarding house for writers and artists (1907), and a gymnasium (1909). In 1904, he founded the Ziemelblazma Society for the Prevention of Alcohol Propaganda [1] .
He was chairman of the Procedural Commission of the Riga Latvian Society .
Augustus Dombrovskis is also regarded as one of the first Latvian violin masters. Studying the best examples of instruments, in collaboration with the largest violinists and violin masters, during his life he produced more than 1,200 string instruments, mainly violins. Currently, the repository of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation contains a set of instruments for the violin quartet of his work.
In 1869, Augustus Dombrovskis married Karlina Elizabeth Kronberg; three sons and a daughter grew up in their family, and the younger sister of Karlina was also brought up.
He died on November 13, 1927 in Riga, was buried in the park of the Ziemelblazma society. A tombstone was erected by the sculptor Gustav Schkilters .
