He won several victories in the youth field and by the mid-1980s he began to be increasingly attracted to the adult squad. He achieved the greatest success in 1985 at the World Cup in Italian Cervinia, where he performed with the four-seater crew of the titled pilot Bernhard Lehman and won a gold medal following all the races.
The athlete planned to take part in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , but because of the sharply increased level of competition in the team, he was outside the list of bobsledders declared for these competitions. After the unification of Germany, he lost all chances to be in the main national team, so he soon decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to a young German overclocker. After completing his career, however, he continued to work in the national team as a coach, still training young athletes. Among his students, for example, an outstanding pilot Andre Lange .
