Career
Uhura was assigned to the starship Enterprise in 2266 with the rank of lieutenant and a senior communications officer. She served in this position throughout the five-year mission of the Enterprise, and also subsequently, in 2271, occupied her under the command of Captain Willard Decker and Rear Admiral Kirk .
In 2271 Uhura received the rank of commander.
In 2293 Uhura was transferred to service in the Academy of Starfleet . Her further biography is unknown.
Alternative Universe
In the movie Star Trek (2009), Zoe Saldana plays the young Uhuru, who is still only a cadet of the Academy, but with the development of the storyline, she is promoted to a communications officer. Uhura has a pretty cool relationship with Kirk after his drunken flirting with her. But she, ultimately, recognizes him as the captain of the Enterprise.
Notable and romantic relationship in incidents with Spock . Although it is unclear when they started, but the first hint was made when, when trying to avoid accusations of favoritism, Spock assigned her to the USS Farragut. Uhura demands that he assign her to the USS Enterprise. Using his own logic against him, she easily gets her way, so she earned her place on the flagship because of her own merits.
In one of the first episodes of the original series (“The Trap for Man ”), a hint was made for potential Uhura and Spock's romantic relationship, he is shown in the following conversation:
Uhura: I am an illogical woman who is currently starting to feel part of this communication console. Why don't you tell me that I am an attractive young lady, or ask if I have ever been in love? Tell me what the planet Volcano looks like in the light of the full moon.
Spock: Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura.
Uhura: I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock.
Name
The surname Uhura is derived from the word Uhuru among the Swahili tribes and in translation means "Freedom." It is believed that Gene Roddenberry named the character in honor of the African socialist movement Uhuru, founded by Tanzanian leader Julius Nyerere [1] .
The name of Uhura in the " Original Series " was never called.
Nevertheless, there were at least three unofficial versions of her name: “Nyota”, “(U) Penda” and “Samara” .

Nyota is the most popular version of the name Uhura. It is found in the original script of The Original Series and is mentioned by William Shetner in his notes.
The Star Trek full-length feature film released in 2009 officially assigned the name Nyota to Uhura's character.
