Biography
Born on April 7, 1924 in the city of Leninakan (currently the city of Gyumri, Armenia ).
He participated in the Great Patriotic War .
In 1949, he graduated from the Theoretical and Composer Department of the Leningrad Conservatory, in 1953 he graduated from the Leningrad Scientific Research Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography , and in 1954 he graduated from the Philosophy Department of Leningrad University .
In 1954 he defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Art Criticism on the topic "Mass Song during the Great Patriotic War."
Since 1955, he was a senior research fellow, and since 1971 , he was the head of the sociology of art and aesthetics sociology at the Leningrad Research Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography.
In 1965 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Arts on the topic " A. P. Borodin ").
Since 1966 - taught at the Leningrad Conservatory, since 1970 - professor.
Scientific and organizational input
Arnold Naumovich Sohor - the largest Soviet music sociologist.
In his fundamental monograph “Sociology and Musical Culture” (L., 1975 ), the subject of modern sociology of music is defined, its objectives, structure and methods are formulated, as well as the system of social functions of music and the typologization scheme of the modern musical public are scientifically substantiated.
Three collections of articles by A. N. Sokhor from the series “Questions of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music” (L., 1980 - 83) are devoted to the same subject.
A.N.Sokhor was the initiator of a series of all-Union and international conferences on pressing problems of the sociology of music in the USSR. It was thanks to the creative and organizational efforts of A. N. Sokhor that the sociology of music, as a serious and very promising scientific discipline, was rehabilitated in the USSR after being held there in the 20-30s. vulgar sociological experiments [1] .
And besides, A. N. Sohor is the author of valuable musicological studies of the composer's works of M. I. Glinka , P. I. Tchaikovsky , A. P. Borodin (including the capital work “Alexander Porfirevich Borodin. Life, work, musical creativity”, M.-L., 1965), I.O. Dunaevsky , V.P. Solovyov-Sedoy , G.V. Sviridov .
