Creative Biography

Parents - Rosa Savelievna Mazel (nee Uryson, 1880-1966) and Abram Lvovich Mazel (1874-1941) [1] . Brother - Julius Abramovich Mazel (1911-1941), a German philologist, died at the front. His grandfather, Savely Isaakovich Uryson (1854, Kovno - 1918, Kislovodsk ), was one of the founders of the Uryson Brothers Banking House (and headed the main office of the bank in Kovno), with branches in St. Petersburg , Moscow , Odessa and other cities.

In 1930, L. A. Mazel graduated from the Mathematics Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University and at the same time the Research Department of the Moscow Conservatory (MGK), as Professor A. N. Alexandrov .

In 1932 he graduated from the graduate school of the Moscow State Conservatory (supervisor - professor M.V. Ivanov-Boretsky ) and received the degree of candidate of art history.

In 1941 he received a doctorate in art history. Theme of the doctoral dissertation: "The basic principle of the melodic structure of a homophonic theme."

In 1931 - 1967 taught at the Moscow Conservatory (professor since 1939 ), from 1936 to 1941 . He was the head of the Department of Music Theory of MGK. Among his famous students is the composer S. Razorenov .

He was buried in Moscow at the Don cemetery [2] .
