Peter Gay ( Eng. Peter Gay ; June 20, 1923 , Berlin - May 12, 2015 , New York ) is an American historian of European culture and social thought.

Biography
From a Jewish family, his own name is Peter Joachim Fröhlich. In 1939, he left Nazi Germany with his family, moved to Cuba , and in 1941 arrived in the United States. In 1946 he received American citizenship, took the English version of his German surname. He graduated from the University of Denver ( 1946 ), and then Columbia University ( 1951 ). He taught political science ( 1948 - 1955 ) and history ( 1955 - 1969 ) at Columbia University. Since 1969 - Professor of Intellectual History of Europe at Yale University . He retired in 1993 .
Scientific Interests
The main works are devoted to the philosophy of the Enlightenment , the culture of the Weimar Republic , and the ideas of modernism . His monographs about Voltaire , Mozart , Freud , Schnitzler gained fame .
