History
The John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation is one of the largest funds in the United States, despite the fact that it is supported by exclusively non-profit organizations. The fund is active in 60 countries and since 1978 has managed to finance projects worth more than 5.5 billion US dollars.
In 1979-1981, the son of John MacArthur, Roderick, who was in a bad relationship with his father because of a divergence in ideological views, sued the directors of the fund, accusing eight directors of financial abuse [2] [3] . By 1981, most directors had been replaced by Roderick's henchmen and supported his liberal views [4] , which led to the creation of “one of the pillars of the liberal philanthropic establishment ” ( Eng. Martin Morse Wooster ) [5] [6] .
In the summer of 2015 in Russia, in accordance with the law on undesirable organizations , the MacArthur Foundation entered the “patriotic stop list”, which was developed by the Federation Council for submission to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation [7] . The organization decided to stop working in the Russian Federation due to the impossibility of organizing effective work of foreign charitable foundations after the adoption of this law and the law on foreign agents [8] .
