History
Alpha TV channel was created in 1993 under the name “Skai TV” ( Greek ΣΚΑΪ TV ) by the Greek shipowner and media tycoon Aristide Alafuzos . In addition to ΣΚΑΪ TV, Alafuzos owned the newspaper Katimerini . Unlike other private channels, the broadcasting of the new station focuses mainly on sports and information, which makes it the main competitor to Mega Channel and ANT1 . However, the channel did not become as successful as expected, and in 1999 was sold to entrepreneur Dimitris Kontominas.
The new owner began the channel upgrade process, culminating in 2000 with a name change on Alpha TV. The broadcasting program became general, designed to find the target audience over the age of 45 years, including news and movies along with entertainment. Satellite broadcasting for channels for Oceania, North America and Europe has also been launched. Thanks to the new concept, Alpha TV has become the third most popular channel in the country [1] .
In 2008, Dimitris Kontominas sold a controlling stake in Alpha TV to the Luxembourg media holding RTL Group , which became the new owner. RTL Group is a major television content producer controlled by German company Bertelsmann . RTL Group controls 32 television channels and 32 radio stations in 11 countries of the world [2] .
