Life and work
Born in the family of a silk merchant. In 1618, Frans Leuks entered the training of the artist Remakl Sina, whose work did not reach us. After 2 years, F.Leux goes to the workshop of P.P. Rubens , where he meets A. van Dyck , who also worked with Rubens in the period from 1617 to 1620. In 1620, F. Lux joined the Antwerp Guild of Artists of St. Luke. In 1635 he leaves for Italy, lives in Rome. After the artist studied the techniques of Italian and Spanish masters there, on January 1, 1638 he was appointed court painter of Emperor Ferdinand III with an annual payment of 600 florins. At the Vienna court at that time, Spanish and Italian art schools were very popular, but F. Leyks combined in his canvases with the skills developed in the workshop of Rubens. In the future, the artist practically does not leave Vienna. In 1646 he went to Graz. In the same year he visited the Austrian generalissimo , Archduke and brother of Emperor Leopold Wilhelm and painted his portrait. Subsequently, the Archduke praised the talent of F. Loeiks and more than once placed orders for the artist - especially after his return to Vienna from the Austrian Netherlands in 1656, where he held the post of the staffhaler.
F.Leux was married three times. From his second wife, Eleanor Claurens, he had three children. In 1645 or earlier, the nobility was granted to him, since in his first testament, drawn up in 1645, F. Leux is called under the noble name von Luxenstein . In 1650, on the instructions of the emperor, he made a trip to the courtyards of the imperial electors and painted their portraits. After the death of Ferdinand III in 1657, F. Loeix was re-approved as a court artist by the Emperor Leopold I.
Currently, canvases by F. Leux can be seen in museums in Stockholm, Vienna, Prague, Dresden, Budapest, Copenhagen, Innsbruck and others. In the service of the Austrian emperors, he painted mainly portraits. He signed his works in various ways - Luycx, Lux, Leux, Laix, Löx, Leix, Lieix, Leuysx .
